King Charles Coronation

Updated: May 8, 2023

May 6th is approaching for an important day for King Charles III. King Charles will get crowned on the 6th may and we want to focus about the companies that work with the royal families, cracked and creased shoes owned by Charles with theories, interesting facts and what he will wear to his coronation.

Did you know that Crockett and Jones are the company that makes and repairs shoes for the royal family? They are an amazing company with talented individuals, and the royal family should be grateful to have them as a connection. Crockett and Jones make bespoke shoes that fit perfectly to their owner, and another service they offer is shoe repairs and they also sell shoe care accessories. This sounds very similar, but I can't put my finger on it...

A slight curiosity we have is what type of repairs King Charles gets. We don't know for certain what type of repairs he has done. There are a few choices such as a sticker sole, where a thin layer of leather is sanded off and replaced with a rubber sole. There is also a resin sole, where a thick layer of leather is sanded away and replaced with a thick rubber sole with a long-lasting tread. For this, sometimes the original stitching is removed, and once the resin sole is stuck on, it is then stitched in place. Another option is half leather soles where an area of leather is replaced with leather and stitched, or the best choice is an entirely new leather sole. The two choices in this situation that would be best for a member of the royal family would be a resin sole so he has grip or leather sole to keep with tradition. Honestly, only Charles and Crockett and Jones know what type of repairs he does.

Random facts because why not:

  • Charles has kept the same shoes since 1971

  • He wears shoes by Crockett and Jones, who also repairs them

  • He focuses on wearing materials made in Britain

  • He rarely throws any clothing away and wears his wardrobe to other events

When you look at pics of Charles, it seems he doesn't look after his shoes. It has to be mentioned, but with the pics to the side, his shoes are cracked and creased, which are both very easy repairs. The cracks, like his, are normally an excess amount of polish that has cracked over time. As a repair this which can be taken off and reapplied. The crease can be removed by using stretching spray and rubbing alcohol and folding the creases out.

We have come to some conclusions as to why he doesn't get them repaired. The creases he keeps as a flex to show that the leather is indeed real calf, considering we now use faux leather for a lot of projects. Also, a used look doesn't look entirely bad and It should be mentioned that a crease in shoes can add comfort with the bend being lighter than new shoes. For the cracked look on his shoes, well, some shoes are designed like that, and on his shoes, it is only cracked in certain parts. We think the shoes are designed like that for a stylish sense. When you look at his shoes, he sure does have a collection, and not all of them are cracked, and the cracking in his shoes actually looks pretty cool and non-accidental.

Another reason for cracked shoes is old money. King Charles is old school and undoubtedly very wealthy. Old money is when you're born and raised with wealth, and you don't feel the need to flash it around as it is something you're used to. Even with his wealth he doesn't like to splurge much and keeps the same wardrobe which is just lovely.

It will be interesting to see what he wears to the coronation. Especially as he has stated that he won't be wearing any old fashion styled clothing as he wants to change the tradition. We will most likely write an article about what he wore and potentially the reasons behind it.

In conclusion, while King Charles III's footwear may not always appear to be in pristine condition, there are reasons behind the creases and cracks in his shoes. The bespoke shoes made by Crockett and Jones, a company with a long-standing relationship with the royal family, are carefully crafted to fit perfectly and can be repaired to ensure longevity. The creases and cracks may also serve as a deliberate style choice or a reflection of the King's old school mentality. Regardless of the reasons, the shoes worn by King Charles III on his coronation day will undoubtedly be a topic of interest and speculation for fashion enthusiasts and royal watchers alike.
